The police arrested two people for allegedly robbing a passenger in a taxi of GH¢70 and a mobile phone.
They are Isaac Yaw Omani; 36, the taxi driver, and Helena Essel, 24; a trader and a mother of three.
Briefing the Ghanaian Times, the Adenta District Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Stephen Ahiatafu, said on Thursday, August 11, that at about 8:30 a.m., the victim boarded a taxi from Adenta to Maajor with Omani, as the driver and Essel with another at large as passengers.
He said on reaching the spot where the victim was to alight, she realised that the doors of the cab were centrally locked.
DSP Ahiatafu said unknown to the victim, Omani locked the car’s central locking system immediately she entered the car.
He said Omani then asked the victim to open the left door and in the process, Essel and her accomplice took the money and her phone from her handbag.
DSP Ahiatafu explained that immediately the victim alighted and was about to pay for the fare, the taxi sped off which prompted the victim to search through her bag.
It was then that she realised that her purse and phone were missing.
He said immediately, the victim boarded taxi and gave Omani and the rest a chase which led to their arrest. They were then handed over to the police.
He said when interrogated, the suspects admitted the offence.
DSP Ahiatafu said the suspects would be put before court soon, and cautioned the public to be wary of taxi cabs they boarded and passengers on board.
