The Nkawkaw Police Command have called for an emergency meeting with the Inter-party dialogue committee of the area to resolve issues of defaming posters of some political leaders. Some posters are reported to have surfaced on walls and trees on major streets of Nkawkaw and the Koforidua Township which describe President John Mahama in disturbing ways and attack his personality. This has become a wild gossip in the area and it is said to be causing trouble between the two major parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Divisional Police Commander of Nkawkaw, ACP Michael Avadetsi, speaking to Joy News, cautioned both parties to desist from doing anything that will breach the peace in the area. “What is necessary is to get the various stakeholders involved that is why I have called an emergency inter-party dialogue committee meeting so that we speak to the members to get to their supporters to desist from this kind of libelous pasting of information to discredit other contestants which will not augur for peace within the area,” he said. Meanwhile, Election Observer group, CODEO has also warned people to desist from posting character defaming posters. Paul Abramprah Mensah, Programmes Manager of CODEO, told Joy News such acts have the potential to mar the electoral process. He said, “It is a criminal offence but people do it underground, it is very difficult for our security agencies to catch up with them. We are in the era that we should base our campaigning on issues – bread and butter, what actually people can do to better the lives of lots of people in the country – and not things that will not do us good.” Defaming people in a country that has gone through five successful elections “does not speak well of us,” he added.
