The police service have denied claims officers deployed to quell violence at the Buduburam Refugee camp yesterday opened fire indiscriminately. The violence followed disagreements over the election of leaders at the camp. One refugee was killed in the violence. It took the intervention of the police to calm nerves and restore order. Some residents accused the officers of firing indiscriminately. But Director of Police Public Affairs, Superintendent Kwesi Ofori, explained to Joy News the police had to act to restore calm. He said the situation was too volatile the local police in the area could not restore order so reinforcement was called in to save the situation. “Looking at the nature of violence being exhibited, the police had no choice but to use tear-gas to scare those who were embarking on violence spree to maintain the peace,” he said. He said the police had intensified patrols in the area and appealed for calm. Supt. Ofori said about thirty people arrested in connection with the violence will assist in investigations.
