Authorities at Cape Coast University have deployed police personnel to the campus hospital to prevent FUSSAG officials from driving away members who have allegedly defied a call for nationwide strike.
The police presence numbering 30 could be seen patrolling the hospital premises while others stood alert to allow senior staff of the hospital who may want to carry on with their duties, to do so without impediment.
This follows attempts three days ago by the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), to force their members still working at the hospital to join the strike.
FUSSAG declared a strike with effect from Monday, 19th August, 2013 across all public universities in Ghana. The decision was taken at an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Thursday 15th August, 2013.
FUSSAG members are demanding the immediate adjustment of their 2013 base pay and a restoration of a special allowance known as market premium which is paid to some senior members of staff.
Joy News Central Regional correspondent Kojo Nyarko reports that despite the police presence, there is no senior member of FUSSAG working as they have now towed the line and are joining the strike.
He says junior workers in the hospital are taking care of patients.
