Police in the Upper West Region have fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse angry youth in Kaleo who were demanding that their town be upgraded into a district. The youth, "chanting no district; no election", mounted what they described as a “peaceful road block” to prevent vehicles from entering or leaving the town. The youth who were angry with the police tear gas intervention hurled stones at the police, Joy News’ Upper West Correspondent Rafiq Salam reported. They were protesting what they claim was government’s failure to upgrade the town into a status of a district. The Acting President of the Kaleo Traditional Council, Naa Wigbert Dogoli Bagah II had early on issued a press statement lobbying for the village to be upgraded into a district. The youth and the people of Kaleo have threatened to boycott the upcoming election if their wishes are not met. It took the intervention of the Regional Police Commander ACP Adae Acheampong to calm the nerves of the youth. He admonished them to send a petition which will be forwarded to the authorities for appropriate action.
