At least three armed robbers have been shot dead during a fire exchange with the police at Weija in Accra.

The criminals reportedly tried to snatch a police vehicle that was on patrol duties at Gbawe, Bortianor, Kokrobite and Kasoa Thursday, when they were gunned down.

The three identified as Kwame Salsa, Jah Rule and Joe have been on the police 'Most Wanted' list, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command has said.

At a news conference in Accra, Regional Police Commander, DCOP G. Alex Mensah said the deceased persons have been on their surveillance for the past three months.

He said they are noted to have been involved in most of the high profile robberies and car snatching operations in Accra and its environs.

The Regional police chief said the three criminals attacked a driver in their recent operation after they were not able to operate his Range Rover.

But they ransacked the vehicle and made away with some valuable items and an undisclosed amount of money, DCOP Mensah said.

When the criminals were shot dead at dawn, the police found on them some of the items they stole from the Range Rover.

“Items found on them include two locally manufactured pistols with nine rounds of BB cartridges, browning pistols with five rounds of nine MM ammunition, and five mobile phones and an iPad,” the Regional Police Commander said.

DCOP Mensah has cautioned other criminals to “repent” from their activities or they will be apprehended by the police.

“We want to sound a strong warning to the criminals to better quit their nefarious activities or face the police squarely in our recent crime combat,” he warned.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu has warned the law will deal with any Ghanaian caught hiding behind social media to commit crimes.

The police chief said his men and women are working to apprehend persons behind fraud and other identity thefts conducted on the new media.

“Those who hide behind the anonymity of social media to commit crimes such as fraud and related identity thefts should desist from such acts before the law catches up on them,” Mr Asante-Apeatu added.
