There is a heightened police presence in Aboabo number two in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, Joy News has gathered.

This has been necessitated by a clash between two Islamic sects, the Tijaniyya, and the Al-Sunna Muslim groups which occurred on May 19.

At least, two people were injured from machete attack and windscreens of two vehicles were smashed in the course of the violence. The two were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Joy News has gathered the clash started as a result of an insult followers of the two sects traded on Facebook.

Speaking to Luv FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor after the incident, an eyewitness who also happened to be a victim disclosed the incident occurred at 5p.m. whilst they were preparing to go to bed.

He said some followers of the Al-Sunna youths identified and assaulted a young man they believed had been insulting their leader on Facebook.

This he said angered members of the Tijaniyya sect who reacted to the attack on their member resulting in the clash.

On his part, another victim who belonged to the Tijaniyya sect claimed that Sheikh Anass Tawfiq is the imam at the Darul Hadith mosque is to be blamed for the confusion and the clash which erupted.

He claimed Anass who belongs to the Al-Sunna sect has the habit of “encouraging his followers to beat up people at the least provocation even when he has no case.”

According to him, they have ignored him on several occasions because their elders had been restraining them.

He argued “We have equally ruthless people who can match them,” but we have to listen to our leaders.

He disclosed their leader, Sheik Abdul Wadud sat all of them down immediately after the incident and advised them to ignore the Al-Sunnas even if they continue to insult them.
