A New Patriotic Party (NPP)activist John Kumah has been arrested by police Wednesday afternoon.He was picked up whilst contributing on a political discussion programme on Hot FM, an Accra-based FM Station. Producer of the programme Nana Fianko confirmed the arrest to Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoh moments after the arrest.Kumah has been taken to the Police Headquarters for interrogation.It is not clear the reason for his arrest, but sources tell Joy News he has been arrested for offensive conduct.John Kumah has been in the news lately warning officials of the NDC to desist from casting aspersions at the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo.He had served notice the NPP would not hesitate in swimming in the gutters of insults with the NDC if it decided to verbally attack their flagbearer.Only last week John Kumah on an Accra Radio station is alleged to have accused President John Mills of being a gay suspect. He was said to be reacting to an earlier allegation made against the NPP Head of Communication, Nana Akomea by an NDC official.It is not clear if John Kumah was arrested because of his pronouncements.Meanwhile the NPP’s Director of Policy, Kweku Kwarteng, has told Joy FM that the arrest did not come as a surprise to the party, saying “since Saturday there have been attempts by the security agency to arrest him” for comments he was purported to have made.He suspects the government might have influenced Mr Kumah’s arrest, and accused it of causing a needless “political arrest”.“The arrest” he maintained was “nothing but to take away the freedom of speech provided by the constitution.”Mr Kwarteng stressed that the NPP would “resist the oppressor’s rule” and announced that the party would amass supporters to march to the Police Headquarters to ascertain the rationale behind Mr Kumah's arrest.Story by Nathan Gadugah and Isaac Essel/Myjoyonline.com
