The Cocoa Affairs Court in Accra will this afternoon determine the fate of Ghanaian entertainment icon Kwasi Kyei Darkwa, KKD, who was arrested yesterday for allegedly sexually assaulting a teenager.
KKD is said to have assaulted a 19-year-old girl in a bathroom at the African Regent Hotel on Saturday.
Joy News has learnt Mr. Darkwa is been sent to court Monday afternoon.
Joy News’ Kwakye Afreh Nuamah who was at the Airport Police Station, where KKD has been kept since Saturday, said he appeared relaxed sporting a white shirt, trousers and wearing a pair of slippers over socks.
KKD is expected to be taken to the Cocoa Affairs court in Accra, Afreh Nuamah reported.
Lawyer for KKD, Nana Asante Bediatuo says he expects the police to send his client to court or grant him bail by tomorrow.
He said they will apply for a bail in court because, “he is presumed innocent until proven guilty…they (police) have not charged him, they are investigating…why should he spend his time in jail when that (investigation) happens?”
He said his client is bent on defending his name and would be prepared to go to court when they police is ready to charge him.
“He is fine… I think that initially, one would expect, he was quite shocked and quite bewildered by all of this…but with his confidence that what is being alleged didn’t happen, he is feeling better,” Mr. Asante Bediatuo assessed his client’s mood.
Meanwhile, the Airport Police have picked up one person in connection with an assault on Kwakye Afreh Nuamah when he covered the arrest of Mr Darkwa yesterday.
Four people, said to be supporters of KKD beat up the reporter and smashed his mobile phone and spectacles. He has since filed an official complaint.
Management of Joy FM has condemned the assault on Kwakye Afreh Nuamah, with Chief Operating Officer Ekyi Quarm saying the company is speaking to its lawyers to determine its next line of action.
“It [assault of journalists] is becoming too rampant, as a business we are going to follow up on this to its logical conclusion,” he assured.
It is a “serious matter” that someone going about his duty lawfully would be assaulted by some disgruntled people, and worse still, in the presence of the police, he said.
