Calm has returned to Adoagyiri in the Eastern Region after violent clashes erupted between youth groups on Thursday, 22nd May.
According to the Eastern South Regional Police Command, around 300 young people took to the streets in protest, blocking roads, burning tyres, and vandalising shops and vehicles in the area.
In a swift response, a reinforcement team from the National Police Headquarters and the National Formed Police Unit was deployed to the community to restore order.
“Calm has been restored at Adoagyiri following the disturbances,” the Police said in a statement.
The violence is believed to be linked to a fatal shooting incident that occurred on Monday, 20th May. Police investigations indicate that one person died, and another sustained injuries during the shooting. A reprisal attack that followed left three others injured, all of whom were taken to hospital for medical treatment.
Tragically, one of the injured victims, identified as Isaah Masawudu, later died at the hospital. News of his death sparked outrage among youth in the Adoagyiri Zongo community, leading to the violent protests.
“Efforts are ongoing to get all those involved arrested to face the full rigours of the law,” police assured.
The Police Command is appealing to residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
“We would like to urge everyone to remain calm as we continue to ensure law and order at Adoagyiri and the surrounding communities,” the statement added.
