Claims that England and Chelsea captain John Terry racially abused QPR's Anton Ferdinand are being "assessed" by police.
Scotland Yard said a member of the public made a complaint about the alleged incident.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that police have been notified of an incident on Sunday 23 October involving alleged racial abuse.
"This is currently being assessed by officers from Hammersmith and Fulham."
Videos surfaced online of Terry and Ferdinand aggressively exchanging words during Chelsea's defeat on Sunday.
It has been alleged that Terry can be seen making racist remarks - a claim he categorically denies.

QPR say they will meet Anton Ferdinand to discuss the reports before deciding whether to take any further action.
In a statement released on Sunday evening, John Terry said it was "clear it was all a misunderstanding".
"I would never say such a thing, and I'm saddened that people would think so," the 30-year-old said.
"I have known Anton for a long time and spoke to him about it after the game and there was no problem between us.
"I congratulated him on their win. He has not accused me of any wrongful remark."
The Football Association is yet to comment on the allegations.
