The Inspector-General of Police, James Oppong Boanuh, has directed the Central Regional Police Command to set up a checkpoint at the Dompoase section of the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway.
That and other measures are to be taken along all highways across the country, the IGP said in an interview with JoyNews’ Israel Laryea.
“Our research has shown that accidents have been occurring there so what we are doing differently is that the Central Regional Police Commander is going to put a roadblock there so that whenever drivers get there, they will be compelled to stop,” the IGP said.
The IGP’s directive comes after two passenger buses crashed on the highway and killing a total of 35 people.
Police say 29 people including one of the bus drivers died on the spot. Five others later died at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital where they had been taken for treatment and one died later.

According to the police, the red Yutong bus travelling from Accra to Takoradi tried to overtake the vehicle in front of it and ended up running into the oncoming white Takoradi to Accra bound Hyundai bus.
