The Ghana Police Service has set up a National Security Elections Task Force Briefing Centre to provide regular updates throughout the election period.
According to the police, this initiative is part of efforts to ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of the upcoming 2024 general elections.
The establishment of the briefing centre aims to tackle misinformation and disinformation that could undermine the integrity of the election process.
It is also designed to address any potential incidents of violence that may arise before, during, or after the elections.
During a press briefing, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, explained that the police would be working closely with telecommunication companies to facilitate communication.
Dr Dampare added that contact numbers will be assigned, enabling direct and real-time communication between the media and the Police Management Board (POMAB).
These contact numbers will be shared with journalists, allowing for quick and accurate reporting of any incidents or emergencies during the election period.
This measure is intended to ensure that the police can respond swiftly to any issues that may arise, thereby enhancing the security and safety of voters and election officials.
Dr Dampare emphasised the importance of collaboration between the police, the media, and the public to maintain peace and order throughout the election process.
“We are currently working with the telcos to assign us a dedicated number that will be used in this room. We will share that with you and among all the political parties and stakeholders so that wherever you find yourself, once there’s a situation that is not being managed well, you can call that number and access me directly and any of the commissioners and team members on the ground."
“We are going to use an engagement approach to manage the situation by bringing on board all the stakeholders at a very high level,” he stated.
