Human rights activist Nana Oye Lithur has said rigorous advocacy could help curb the increasing spate of mob justice in the country. Her comments come days after a video footage showed some students of the University of Ghana physically abusing a young lady suspected of stealing. Nana Oye Lithur said the police have done a lot to dissuade the general public from taking the law into their own hands and lynching suspects but stressed the need for more to be done, if better progress is to be made in thatis regard. She stated that "there has been some level of investigations and prosecution but maybe this was not made public and that is why we may think that nothing is being done but by and large people do go scot-free." "I believe that [the] Public Relations section of the Ghana Police Service and NCCE (National Commission for Civic Education) should start with education, creating the awareness and also encouraging persons who effect citizens arrest to hand over the culprit or the suspect to the police," she advised. Meanwhile the acting head of the Police Public Affairs Directorate, DSP Cephas Arthur has said the Police will ensure that people who engage in mob justice are brought to book. “The issue of Mob Justice is very worrying. Sometimes you find it difficult finding some evidence and sometimes things stolen are re-stolen by parts of the mob or they are left somewhere unattended to and they get missing,” he intimated. He added that the police are “religiously” following the case about the young lady who was molested by the students of the University of Ghana and are working closely with the university authorities to ensure that the culprits are made to face the law.
