The Ghana Police Service has sent a strong warning to members of the public who intentionally hijack and abuse its Crime Fighters telephone lines to back off or face arrest. Director of Police Public Affairs, Superintendent Kwesi Ofori, who issued the warning said it was regrettable that people would show gross disrespect to the service to the extent of mocking and abusing the system put in place to help them. “People call the (Crime Fighters) centre to make mockery of us, jam the lines without saying anything [meaningful]” he said and warned that “they would be arrested if they try to harass us”. He was speaking at the launch of the Crime Fighters MTN short code 18555, a toll free number accessible 24 hours for crime reporting. It was done in collaboration with the British High Commission and MTN. Sup. Kwesi Ofori said most people call to utter gibberish that are too distasteful to be repeated in public. He recounted an instance where someone called to tell the police that his beard is on fire and asked them to dispatch their patrol team to quench the burning fire. Director General of Police Operations, DCOP John Kudalor who described crime fighting as “no joke” called on the public to make good use of the MTN short code to inform them of any crime going on it any part of the country. He was, however, grateful to the public for providing them with a number of leads that have led to the arrests of some criminals in the society. Story by Isaac Essel/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
