Armed policemen dispatched to James Town in Accra to keep the peace in a family ceremony had the shock of their lives when they were chased out by rifle wielding land guards. The policemen, led by Chief Inspector J. A. K. Kudese, went to a family house at James Town to ensure law and order in the installation of a head of the Hansen family at James Town, but had to run for their lives when they were confronted by the men. A police source at the James Town Police Station told the Daily Graphic that a faction was opposed to the installation of Reginald Bruce Thompson as the head of the family, when there was an acting head in the name of Gustav Adolphus Hansen, 85. They therefore reported the purported installation to the police. The source said although the police invited the group for an amicable settlement, it ignored the invitation and decided to go ahead with the installation procedure. It said the police command then deployed four policemen to the venue for the installation ceremony, adding that “before the police could take positions, action pump gun shots were heard from all angles, forcing the police to withdraw and run back to barracks for their dear lives”. The source said in order not to disturb the peace in the area, the police commander again invited the leader of the group for discussion but this time, he accepted the invitation. Chief Inspector Kudese confirmed the story and said the peace in the area would have been marred if the police had decided to hit back. He said the police had launched an investigation into the incident to uncover which people fired the shots, who ordered them and where they got the guns from. Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports said a passerby was injured when the guns being indiscriminately fired hit him.
