Former Deputy Minister for Sports and Member of Parliament for Aburi-Nsawam, O.B Amoah has kicked against appointing political cronies to head sports disciplines in the country.
His call follows a controversial and hotly contested GOC elections in which Prof Dodoo, an olympian was finally elected on Saturday.
The GOC controversy which has lasted for over a year came about partly because of allegations that the new appointees were based more on political affiliation than competence.
Espousing his views on Asempa Fm’s Sports Morning Show on Tuesday, OB Amoah said Ghana should not entertain and encourage this mode of appointments because it is a recipe for disaster.
According to him, sports is a uniting tool and should stay as such without any political colour.
He explained that the moment we start doing appointments based on political affiliations then we will be encouraging mediocrity and kill one cardinal principle of sports- competition.
He said a position that should be given to a qualified person will not be given to him or her since he or she belongs to a different party and when this happens it is the sports in question which suffers.
He added that the practice could have negative repercussion and will affect performance of athletes in the long run.
The former Deputy Sports Minister therefore cautioned all those in support of this idea to be wary of its dangerous ramifications.
