The passage into law of the Constitutional Instrument, CI 78 has necessitated a readiness alert for political parties to contest seats in the 45 newly created constituencies.Initially, some parties had reservations about going ahead with primaries in these constituencies without the backing of a C.I. However,it seems almost all the parties are gearing up to participate in the parliamentary elections in these constituencies. The minority in parliament led by the New Patriotic Party consistently called for the rejection of the CI 73, which changed to CI 74 and eventually ended up as CI 78.Their concern was that the very instrument the EC intended to use to create the 45 new constituencies was riddled with mistakes. On Tuesday October 3, the CI 78 matured into law and gave the EC the legal backing to create the new constituencies. General Secretary of the NPP, told joy news, the party is ready to contest in the 45 new constituencies.Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, NPP General Secretary and Chairman of the party Jake Obestebi Lamptey explained to JOy News that the NPP’s decision to contest the seats,is, ultimately to deepen the democratic process.Communication director for the convention people’s party (CPP), Nii Armah akomfra told joy news; the party has made provision for the newly created constituencies promising the CPP will make a huge impact in 6 regions. According to him, while parliament debated the matter, the CPP was feverishly preparing in anticipation of its passage into law.The Progressive People's Party (PPP), is also prepared but the Party’s National Secretary Kofi Asamoah Siaw had some reservations with the passing of CI78 into law.He said the C.I ommitted certain constituencies, which in his view would make it illegal to use results from such constituencies in collating votes during the GeneralElections. He called on all political parties to present a united front in addressing such errors before they become an albatros over the 2012 election results. The ruling NDC obviously held primaries in the newly created constituencies before the law was even passed indicating their eagerness to contest. From the look of things, the political parties will be doing themselves more good than harm if they contest the newly created constituencies instead of letting theopportunity to grab an extra seat pass them by.
