The newly-elected Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, John Dumelo, has highlighted how wise voters have become with regards to electing leaders.
He made this comment on the back of the strategies employed by his opponent Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the recently held elections.
John Dumelo had earlier accused Lydia of inducing the electorate with food items, and money and even whispering into the ears of the voters while they were in the queue to cast their ballots.
In an engaging interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, John Dumelo attributed his success to his hard work and how democratically mature the voters have become.
He said some voters aren't easily swayed by handouts; they rather make decisions based on policies and their current situations.
Dumelo believes voters value meaningful representation over material goods, expressing the electorate's discernment and integrity.
“Judging the results that came in, you can’t fool the people all the time. If they don’t want to vote for you, they would collect the things and still not vote for you,” he said.
Although he could have also followed Lydia Alhassan by sharing items with the voters, the actor said that was politically unethical.
"You don't fight crime with crime; that's why I was just cool and calm about it," he added.
Dumelo said he rather prioritises his constituents' needs and interests, seeking to build a strong rapport and effectively address their concerns.
John Dumelo won the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He won over the incumbent Member of Parliament Lydia Seyram Alhassan, having 47,560 votes to Alhassan's 39,214 votes.
