A senior adjunct fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has debunked claims that many people engage in corruption because they’re poorly paid.
Prof Atsu Aryee has been speaking at a forum by the IEA to discuss why some Ghanaians engage in corrupt acts.
Results from a recent IEA study on corruption and it's root causes has revealed that Ghanaians regard low salaries as the third leading factor for corruption after get-rich-quick schemes and greed and selfishness.
Prof. Aryee was speaking at a roundtable discussion organised by the IEA on the roots of corruption.
Professor Atsu Aryee has disputed the logic of these results saying with the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS), salaries have increased.
However, this increase has not corresponded with a dip in the levels of perception of corruption as respondents nationwide said they need to take something extra on the side to augment their salaries.
