President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to bold leadership and a clear vision to guide Ghana through its economic challenges.
Speaking during the 68th Independence Celebrations on Thursday, March 6, President Mahama emphasised the need for responsible governance and long-term planning to ensure that national assets are well-managed for posterity.
“Posterity will not accept our failures or take them kindly. As President, I am committed to providing the bold leadership and clarity of vision needed to navigate the turbulent economic waters we are currently sailing in while safeguarding our future,” he said.
He also stressed that these anniversaries should serve as moments of reflection on how well national resources are being stewarded for future leaders.
Ghana’s history, he noted, should not be one of missed opportunities but of relentless efforts toward progress.
President Mahama also criticised the paradox of proclaiming self-reliance while continuing to seek aid from donor agencies, stating that such an approach renders the concept of independence meaningless.
President Mahama acknowledged that discussions on independence frequently highlight Ghana’s dependence on imports, donor aid, and International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailouts.
While recognising these issues as real, he cautioned against allowing them to become clichés. Instead, he urged that the focus be placed on decisive actions that will break the cycle of dependency, rather than empty rhetoric about an Africa that is beyond aid.
