Residents of Bonwire in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality of the Ashanti Region are facing irregular water supply caused by the power crisis.

Erratic flow from the Ghana Water Company systems has compelled consumers to resort to boreholes as alternative source for domestic and commercial use.

People of the famous Kente-weaving town say they are getting frustrated over the water situation, as the impact of the energy situation has become unbearable.

They claim the few boreholes they depend on are unable to supply the required quantity due to unstable power supply as these boreholes depend on electricity.

The water situation has affected academic work at the Secondary Technical School in the area.

Headmistress of the school, Efuandy Eshun-Fameye, says school’s time table has been affected by the water situation.

“Students are compelled to go out in search of water for personal use and they return late. This affects class hours since they return to school late, due to the queues they join with the townsfolk,” she said.

Students say their finances are also affected as they spend part of their stipends on water offered for sale.

Meanwhile, International NGO, Christian Broadcasting Network has brought some relief to students and authorities with the provision of a borehole facility and 500 gallon capacity reservoir.

“We believe this project will ease the pressure on these students and enable them spend much time on their books. We hope the reservoir ensures continuous supply of water even when there is no electricity to power the borehole,” said John Okine Lartey, Deputy Director of the NGO.

There is also an intervention by Safe Water Network to construct a borehole for the community.

Program Manager, Charles Yeboah, says there are plans to also provide solar energy as alternative source of energy to power the borehole to ensure uninterrupted water supply.
