Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused the new National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration of attempting to shift the blame for the country's power sector challenges to the previous NPP government.
Speaking during the vetting of ministerial nominees on Monday, January 13, he expressed concern that the current government was deflecting responsibility rather than taking decisive action to address the problem.
“It is deeply troubling to hear that the new administration is attempting to shift responsibility for a so-called looming crisis onto the previous government,” he remarked. “Let the record show that, despite various challenges, the outgoing NPP government successfully maintained a stable and reliable power supply.”
Drawing on his experience as Chair of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Board, Mr Afenyo-Markin confidently stated that the NPP government ensured stability in the power sector, even in difficult circumstances.
He contrasted this with the notorious “Dumsor” era under the Mahama administration, which, he argued, caused significant hardship for businesses, households, and communities, while severely undermining public trust in the energy sector.
“The people of Ghana have entrusted this government with the responsibility to lead, not to lament,” he continued. “We will not tolerate any attempt to revisit past failures or indulge in blame-shifting rhetoric.”
Mr Afenyo-Markin also emphasised that, should the Energy Minister nominee be approved, they must return to Parliament with a comprehensive and sustainable plan to ensure a consistent and uninterrupted power supply.
“What we expect are clear, actionable solutions and forward-thinking strategies, not a file full of excuses or blame,” he added.
Mr Afenyo-Markin reiterated that the people of Ghana deserve leadership that prioritises action over rhetoric, responsibility over deflection, and tangible results over excuses, he lamented.
