The Controller and Accountant General, Mr Christian Sottie, has observed that installing pre-paid electricity meters in public offices could lower productivity.
He said the financial management system in place currently made it difficult for many of such institutions to pre-finance power. That, he feared could lead to offices going without power because of the unavailability of funds.
Mr Sottie was responding to concerns raised by a contributor at a public workers forum in Ho in the Volta Region.
He said he would explore ways of addressing the situation to avoid the current difficulties.
Mr Steve Selormey, Volta Regional Coordinating Director who chaired the function, called for proactive measures to address the problem.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in late 2007 changed credit meters in the Ho Municipality with pre-paid meters creating management problems for certain organizations some of whose heads now raise money from private sources to pre-finance power purchases.
The forum was part of the Controller Accountant General's Department's outreach programme throughout the country to explain its workings and solicit views from the public to improve its performance.Source: GNA
