President John Dramani Mahama Thursday gave an assurance that his administration would work towards ending power outages and ensure stable supply of power in the country. That, he said, was crucial to propel the country's socio-economic development and "guarantee the growth that we anticipate". President Mahama was speaking at a meeting with executive members of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The executive members were at the Castle to congratulate President Mahama on his election and discuss ways of addressing the power situation with him. In a brief remark before the meeting went into a closed session, the President said power generation cost had shot up because Ghana generated power from light crude oil, instead of gas. That, he said, was due to the curtailment of gas supply following the damage to the West Africa Gas Pipeline. He said President Goodluck Jonathan had assured him of the resumption of gas supply from the West Africa Gas Pipeline within the shortest possible time. President Mahama said Ghana needed to generate enough power to become sustainable and resume the supply of power to neighbouring countries. The Chief Executive Officer of the VRA, Mr Kweku Awotwi, said the energy sector was the bedrock of the country's economy and assured President Mahama of the collaboration of his outfit to find ways to address the challenges facing that sector.
