Ghana’s president Nana Akufo-Addo has described the Prince of Wales as “an old friend of our country.”

Ahead of his second visit to the country on November 2, 2018, together with the Duchess of Cornwall, the president paid glowing tributes to Prince Charles whose relationship with Ghana dates back to the 70s.

“I welcome the Prince of Wales very warmly back to Ghana, a country he knows well. He is an old friend of our country and we look forward to receiving him…” the president said in a statement announcing the visit of Their Royal Highnesses Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla to Ghana.

The visit according to the British High Commissioner, Ian Walker, will further strengthen ties between Ghana and the UK.

“Their Royal Highnesses’ visit to Ghana comes at an opportune moment. The UK and Ghana’s shared history and common values form the basis of our enduring friendship…This visit allows us to celebrate all that is good about ties. And-importantly- to focus on shaping the common future we each want to create,” he stated.

Prince Charles returns to Ghana on November 2, after almost 41-years since his last visit. His Royal Highness was in Ghana in March 1977, during which he attended the Golden Jubilee of Achimota School, formerly the Prince of Wales College and a durbar in his honour in Kumasi by His Majesty Otumfuo Nana Opoku Ware II.

It will however be the first for the Duchess of Cornwall who will attend an event for a range of Ghanaian women in leadership positions.

Whilst in Ghana, their Royal Highnesses will meet the president at the Flagstaff House after which a state banquet will be held in their honour.

They will also visit the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as well the Christianborg Castle which until recently was the seat of government.

The visit will also strengthen relations between Commonwealth countries.

Apart from Ghana, Their Royal Highnesses will be visiting Gambia and Nigeria all of which are members of the Commonwealth.

The Royal Commonwealth Society Africa head John Apea has expressed excitement about the visit.

“This is a historic visit by Their Royal Highnesses to Ghana, Nigeria and Gambia and we intend to leverage on this visit to promote the values of the commonwealth which include promoting literacy and champion the cause of youth and businesses within the Commonwealth countries,” he said.
