When the time comes, the Prince of Wales will make a great Commonwealth head. That’s according to the Royal Commonwealth Society Africa head John Apea.

He said Prince Charles has for years been a champion of environmental issues and will add to the wealth of opportunities the global brand has for its members when he takes over as head.

Apea was speaking on the Pulse programme on the Joy News channel on MultiTV, Thursday ahead of the confirmed visit to Ghana of Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

The two will begin a-three country Africa visit on October 31 which will see them go to Gambia, Ghana and Nigeria.

On November 2 the Royal couple will arrive in Ghana from Gambia before moving to Nigeria for their final leg of the visit.

At the end of this year’s heads of government meeting it was decided that the Prince of Wales will become the next head of the Commonwealth, a decision Apea believes is in the right direction.

“Prince Charles will be an excellent head of the Commonwealth when the time is right because of what he stands for and his pursuit of promoting a safe environment.  The Duchess of Cornwall has really promoted education and literacy for people as well,” he said.

Benefits 

While many look forward to what will be an exciting visit for Ghana and Africa there have been concerns about what the benefits will be for Ghana. 

Some have even questioned the relevance of the Commonwealth.

But John Apea insists the benefits of this visit are innumerable ranging from business promotion, literacy and education.

According to him the opportunities for the development opened to Commonwealth countries are many and the time has come for member states to take full advantage of it.

He hinted of the setting up of a commonwealth business hub in Ghana which shall have a network of top CEOs working together for the good of the nation.

As a result a select few of top businessmen and women in Ghana will be visiting Riyadh in November for a high-level business meeting.
The rationale will be to establish great business interactions between businesses in the Commonwealth and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
