Prisoners will now have a wide variety of food, as they are soon to grow their own food to supplement the government’s meagre feeding grant.
Close to 16 thousand inmates reside in the various prisons in the country, with each depending on GH¢1.80 for three square meals a day.
Speaking to Joy News, the Controller General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Matilda Baffour Awuah said the amount is woefully inadequate to meet the nutritional needs of the inmates.
“One cedi eighty pesewas is not enough, she said, but under the current circumstances, we also want to make sure that the prisoner himself farms to support his/her feeding.
According to Mrs Awuah, the prison service is planning on expanding the agricultural activities of the prisoners and hopes to soon have a wide variety of foods for the inmates.
She explained that official requests have been made to the Ministry of Interior but stressed that in the meantime, the inmates will be equipped to grow their own food to complement the monies provided.
