Prof. Evans Atta Mills has condemned the chieftaincy crisis in the Anlo traditional area which has led to loss of huamn life and property , describing it as a blot on our national history. In a press release issued in Accra on Monday November 5, 2007, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer said it is extremely unfortunate that the Interior Minister and the security apparatus did not act much sooner to avoid the carnage that has occurred. Adding that this is made more poignant by the glaring ominous signs and warnings given.Prof. Mills was of the view that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has had the experience of the extent to which chieftaincy disputes can escalate but failed to learn from these experiences. This he said is borne out by the gruesome beheading of the Overlord of Dagbon, Yakubu Andani II and forty of his subjects, the Ga chieftaincy crisis, the Sefwi Wiawso chieftaincy crisis, and now the Anlo chieftaincy crisis. He said it is highly unacceptable and a matter of national concern the way President Kufuor and his NPP government are carving an image that portrays them as people who only act after the worst has happened. The NDC flag bearer lamented that more than enough blood has been shed and more than enough lives have been lost.He therefore, called on government to ensure that the security agencies act in a professional manner devoid of any emotional sentiment that is the norm in situations of this nature when a colleague has also lost his life. This concern according to Prof. Mills is a real one in the light of reports of a possible death in police custody of a suspect.Prof. Mills extended his sincere condolences and sympathies to all the families that have lost loved ones, including the family of the deceased police officer. He also said his concern remains with the injured and he wished them a full and speedy recovery.According to Prof. Mills, the NDC wish to reassure the people of Anloga that the party remains steadfast in its concern for their welfare and and he, personally will bring all the power and influence he possesses to bear, in ensuring an amicable peaceful solution to their predicament.
