The National Democratic Congress’ candidate for the 2008 Presidential elections, Professor J.E.A. Mills has urged journalists not to be cowed by the murder of the Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Mr. Samuel Ennin. In a statement signed by Koku Anyidoho, Deputy In-charge of Media Relations at the office of Prof. Mills, he said as shocking as the death of Mr. Ennin was, he sincerely hoped that it would not cow any journalist into submission “as the vital role that they have played, are playing, and continue to play in the forward march of our dear country cannot be overemphasized.” Prof Mills, who said he returned to the country from a private visit to South Africa on Sunday only to meet with “the very sad news” of Ennin’s death, decried the spate of crime in the country and commended the police for responding with dispatch in their efforts to arrest the culprits. “It is very unfortunate the way all manner of criminals seem to be on the loose and how this time around, it is a seasoned journalist who has had his life cut short and my heart goes out to the nuclear and extended family of the deceased as well as the GJA for losing one of theirs. “I must commend the police for the swiftness with which they are putting in place concrete measures to apprehend the people who committed the heinous crime and hope that it would not be long before the long arm of the law ropes them in.” Samuel Ennin was murdered in cold blood on Friday, February 09, 2007 at a pub in Kumasi while relaxing with friends.
