The Public Service Workers Union (PSWU) of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) has expressed concern about the alleged take-over of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) by the Stanbic Bank.
It noted that the ADB plays a crucial role as the backbone of the national economy and therefore appealed to the government and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to come out clear about their intentions to defuse the unnecessary tension that was being built by the workers of the two banks and a section of the population.
Mr. Abraham Okine, General Secretary of the PSWU expressed the concern when addressing the Ashanti regional branch of the Union at its delegates’ conference in Kumasi on Thursday.
The day’s conference attended by 108 delegates selected from the various districts in the region aimed at taking stock of its activities and programmes and adopts effective measures to improve on its performances.
He was not happy about the recent labour unrest in the country and attributed it partly to the non-availability of the Legislative Instrument (LI) that gives the confines of the law for proper conformity by practitioners and all stakeholders.
The General Secretary therefore urged the government through the Ministry of Manpower, Youth and Employment to expedite action on the LI on the Labour Act 651, 2003.
Mr Okine stated that the union wanted to chart a new look and frontiers which demanded the efforts of the members towards the attainment of the objective.
He therefore asked the various branches of the union to organize themselves for regular meetings and initiate more programmes at all times.
Mr Mensah Nyarko, National Chairman of the PSWU, who swore the seven-member new executives for the regional branch of the union under the chairmanship of Mr A.B. Santos into office, advised them to work harder to ensure growth and development of the union.
Mr Santos also advised members to unite and co-operate with the executives to enable them to steer the affairs of the union successfully.
