We the National Executive Council of the Private Universities Students Association of Ghana (PUSAG) wish to condemn and reject the unfortunate statement made by the Hon. Minister of Employment on 2nd May 2012, which was reported on BBC under the headline “Ghana private universities ‘cause unemployment’”. The report indicated that Ghana’s Minister for Employment and Social Welfare and MP for Nabdam, blamed private universities for high levels of graduate unemployment in the country. He made these statements when he was responding to complaints by the Ghana’s Trade Union Congress about government’s failure to create jobs. We NEC of PUSAG see this statement as a move by the Hon. Moses Asaga to ridicule and tarnish the well-built image of Private Universities in the country and internationally. Also we believe the Hon. Minister is trying to push blames to save his job due to government’s incapability and slow means to provide jobs in the country to meet the rising unemployment needs.
The importance of Private Universities in Ghana cannot be under estimated since very important people in the country have acknowledged and accepted it; some of these are as follows:
Vice President John Dramani Mahama commended private universities and colleges for their complementary role in providing quality education in the country. He said “huge number of senior secondary school students that come out every year and adult learners could not be absolved into the public tertiary institutions alone.” Vice President Dramani said this in a speech read for him by Mr. Alex Tettey-Enyo, former Minister of Education at the 44th graduation and 4th congregation of the Ghana Christian University College (GCUC) on Saturday in Amrahia in the Greater Accra Region.
Also with reference to Nov. 29th, 2009 GNA - Professor Paul Boakye, Chief Director, Ministry of Education, commended private universities for their contributions towards the socio economic and manpower development of the country. He said "Available statistics indicated that enrolment in private tertiary education is about 40,000, contributing to around 28 per cent of the total student population of universities and polytechnics together,” He was speaking during the 15th congregation of Valley View University (VVU) at Oyibi.
Further, other reasons why Private Universities are important is the apt student-lecturer ratios, this enables students to really understand what the lecturer teaches as compared to other tertiary institutions that have up to 500-1000 students to one lecturer. The private tertiary institutions have also integrated human development modules into the academic courses to meet the human resource needs of the country and last but not the least most people in his government attend or have attended private universities to upgrade their standard or qualification, does that mean they are of low quality? We leave that to him to answer. We believe in the definition by Professor Aheto of EP University who said the main purpose of education "is to transform individuals within society, to prepare and qualify them for work in the economy as well as to integrate people into society and teach them societal values and morals". Students of private universities in Ghana are the best in the country because we are also taught how to live good and moral lives. As compared to other tertiary institutions we do not rape and abuse others, in other words private universities have maintained a good track record and should be praised for their good work and contribution to national development.
From the above we find it very difficult to understand what made or warranted the ill-mannered statement made by the Hon. Minister. PUSAG, it’s over 45,000 students and graduates from the Private Universities therefore wish to sound a word of caution to him, to immediately apologize to all private universities or we would advise ourselves legally or otherwise. Also we give him up to the end of this month to resign his position as minister of Employment due to this baseless and no evidential statements towards all private universities to allow a more competent and qualified person to take up the position.
