Percy Obrempong Agyapong, President of the Ghana Comedians Network, wants more comedians to be billed for events.
According to him, government agencies, particularly, can contribute greatly to the comedy sector if they consider giving them more premium at their various programmes.
He said this during his presentation on Joy FM’s CREATIVE INDUSTRY MANIFESTO series, on Showbiz A-Z last Saturday, April 27, 2024.
He told the host Kwame Dadzie that while this brings food to the table of the comedians, it will also encourage more people to respect comedy and invest in its activities. .Â
"They have to be intentional that comedy should will be part of their planning. When events are going on, at least two comedians can be called to perform so that we too we know that we are working, so we can take care of our families, inspire people," he said.
He also suggested that comedians can be taken on tours with political leaders during their various assignments.
Percy noted that comedy in recent times, has received some visibility through the hard work of the comedians but they are saddled with various issues such as high tax rates for their comedy events.
"Sometimes we don't even have sponsors but you see tax authorities coming and before you are done with the event, you are owing," he remonstrated.
Lastly, he bemoaned lack of venues for entertainment events as one thing that should be checked by government.
