The Queenmother of the New Juaben traditional area, Nana Yaa Dani, was on Tuesday arraigned before a Koforidua circuit court for allegedly orchestrating an attack on Madam Betty Okyiere Darko, alias Yaa Afrakomaa, a trader.
With her in the dock were two of her children, Eric Addo, a driver and Adwoa Serwa alias Gifty Boateng.
A fourth person, Nana Osei was not in court because he was writing examinations in his school at Koforidua.
They pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault and were granted GH¢5,000 bail with a surety each to justify.
Presenting the facts, Chief Inspector Ayao Moses, told the court that both the complainant, Madam Okyere Darko and the accused, are residents of Srodae, a suburb of Koforidua.
He said that the first accused, Nana Yaa Dani, Queenmother of the New Juaben traditional area, had a confrontation with the complainant at a wedding ceremony at Atakyem, near Kofo-ridua on June 28, 2008 at about 1.30 pm which was later resolved.
The prosecutor said that Nana Yaa Dani and her entourage on board her private car with registration number ER 88 T, later (same day) crossed the complainant who was in another car, at a traffic light near the Koforidua Central Market and without any provocation, the three persons got down and subjected the complainant to severe beatings in the full glare of by-standers.
“She (complainant) bled profusely from the injuries whilst the queen (A1) sat in her car without saying anything thus encouraging the act,” he said.
The prosecutor said that Madam Darko and the occupant of the car rushed to the police station and lodged a complaint where medical forms were issued for her to attend hospital and upon intensive investigations, the accused were put before court.
The Judge, Justice N.C.A. Agbevor, asked the queen mother why such an incident should occur since she is an epitome of peace and unity within the traditional area.
Nana Yaa Dani replied that “the complainant has been worrying me ever since my installation as the queen of New Juaben.”
The case has been adjourned to July, 29, 2008.
