Hundreds of people at Adankrono and Kade Zongo in the Kwaebibirim District of the Eastern Region have been rendered homeless after a heavy rainstorm that hit the communities.

15 houses collapsed completely, while about 100 buildings - including schools - had their roofs ripped-off after the violent storm last week.

The victims are currently sheltering temporarily with relatives and friends at surrounding communities, while teaching and learning have been halted at the affected schools.

Eastern Regional Minister, Antwi-Boasiako Sekyere after the storm visited the affected communities to see for himself the extent of damage.

He has directed officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to compile a list of the displaced families and conduct an assessment on property destroyed. He said this will facilitate efforts to help the victims.

The Minister assured that heads of the affected schools that they will soon receive the necessary assistance to enable children get back to the classroom.

Mr. Sekyere observed that the destruction caused by the rainstorm has been severe because there were no wind breakers in the communities and also most of the affected houses were old and weak.

He therefore entreated the community members to start planting trees to avert a similar occurrence in future.

Regional NADMO Coordinator, Ransford Boakye, added his voice to the minister's call to plant more tress.

He said instead of the predominantly mud houses, residents of the affected communities and others in the region should endeavor to put up strong structures made of bricks to prevent a recurrence of the devastation.

The Chief of Adankrono, Nana Sarpong Kumankuma, was grateful for the Minister's visit.

 He recalled a similar incident in 2011 when the town flooded after a heavy down pour which also caused late President John Evans Atta Mills to visit them.

He said the visits alone shows that Government cared for the people of the communities.
