Former President Jerry John Rawlings has stated that the party which he founded has a slim chance of holding on to power in the 2012 elections as a result of the in-actions of the Mills-led administration.
Mr. Rawlings who was the Guest of Honour at the 29th celebration of the 31st December 1981 Revolution said the government is gradually failing to live up to the principles that got the party back into power.
He said the extent to which corruption has become endemic is alarming as a result of the government's unwillingness to deal with corrupt past government officials in the erstwhile Kufour administration. He said Ghana is gradually becoming like Nigeria where corruption is so institutionalised.
Former President Rawlings went on to mention various atrocities allegedly committed by agents of the Kufour government, among which are the death of Issah Mobila who died after some security officials assaulted him in the Northern region.
Mr. Rawlings said “no person has a right to take away another human’s life and getaway with it,” stressing that if those who masterminded such atrocious evils walk about freely without consequences, what would be the essence of the principles of the party founded on justice, probity and accountability?
He stated that “as a government, set up a commission of enquiry to establish the allegations” to unravel all the wrongs that occurred under the Kufour administration.
He indicated that even Kufour whom he describes as more corrupt than all past leaders put together had the guts to call him a liar because the Mills-led government had failed to prosecute past government officials for commissions.
He said right after taking over from him, former President Kufour increased the salaries of various appointees to astronomical levels even higher than what he was receiving before leaving office.
He further accused President Kufour of attempting to destroy the army saying “that man was out to destroy the armed forces. They have always hated the armed forces.”
He said government’s inability to recognize the contribution of Canada in the oil find is “disgraceful” as the country was close to striking the oil but hit a rock in 1986 when a $500 million investment demand was very difficult to come by at the time.
Mr. Rawlings said the NDC was created from the conscience of a nation and not from a party. He therefore advised government officials to desist from fighting the NPP with money: “You think you can take them on money for money? You will lose,” adding the only way to defeat them is for the government to expose the wrongs done by the past administration.
The president of the 31st December Women’s Movement, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings told the NDC faithfuls to conscientise people about the revolution and what dilapidated conditions existed before the time.
He said the NDC party and government cannot be separated from the revolution, insisting that those who have such a belief are “lost.”
Government officials and party functionaries who made it to the public lecture to climax the celebration were, Sherry Aryittey, Minister of Science and Technology, Zita Okaikoi Minister of Tourism, deputy minister of Finance, Mr. Fiifi Kwetey, Hon. Afottey Agbo, Presidential aide Nii Lantey Vanderpuiye and Mr. Kofi Adams.
