Former president Jerry John Rawlings left Accra yesterday evening to South Africa to observe the inauguration of the newly elected President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma.Mr Rawlings, who was accompanied by the former first lady Konadu Agyeman Rawling, would be leading the government officials that would be attending the ceremony slated for Saturday, May 9 2009.Aide to ex-president Rawlings, Kofi Adams, told Joy News the visit is expected to boost cooperation between Ghana and South Africa.He said Mr. Rawlings was appointed by President Atta Mills to lead the government delegation because of his involvement in the governance of Ghana.Mr. Adams also noted that it was prudent for Mr. Rawlings to lead the delegation due to his record as a former head of state and the personal relationship he had with South Africa.He touted the long-standing relationship that exists between the two countries.News24 reports that a glamorous event to celebrate the inauguration of Jacob Zuma as democratic South Africa's fourth president will cost the taxpayer R75m.Builders have already erected the special stage with bullet-proof glass in the amphitheatre at the Union Buildings, where Zuma will take the oath of office on May 9, under the supervision of Chief Justice Pius Langa.Over 100 dignitaries have been invited to participate in the event in which over 25 of them have confirmed their participation.Story by Isaac Essel/Myjoyonline.com
