The rift between the camps of President Mills and ex-President Rawlings, is deepening as some Rawlings loyalists report death threats on them.
As a result, some NDC radio commentators in Kumasi have had to vacate their homes fearing for their lives.
They claim some nameless people have warned them to desist from complaining about perceived maltreatment of former President Rawlings and his family on radio programs.
Akwasi Ofori Agyemang, one of the commentators, is also accusing national security operatives of trying to influence producers of political talk programmes on radio to prevent them (Rawlings loyalists) from being empaneled to discuss issues.
Mr Agyemang told Luv News Elton John Brobbey that he started receiving death threats after commenting on government’s “snail pace” approach in providing a befitting accommodation for the Rawlings family.
“Some people within government are not tolerant of divergent views, if some young men by virtue of the fact that they have been brought through the CJA [pressure group Committee for Joint Action] system by Ato Ahwoi into government, and will decide to destroy the very foundation of the party, then I am sorry for the NDC.”
He said the party was formed on the ideals of Mr Rawlings and that he, like many others, was attracted into the party by those ideals.
“If we move away from the principles and ideals of this man [Rawlings] then it means I have no business being part of those people.”
He said being the founder of the NDC, any negative actions directed at Rawlings would affect the support base of the party, attributing the party's dwindling popularity in the Ashanti Region to how Mr Rawlings was being treated.
He said all offices in the region except Obuasi have been closed down, fearing that the latest development in the party could affect its fortune in the 2012 general elections.
Mr Agyemang said he felt uncomfortable with persons like Omane Boamah, Samuel Okudzeto, James Agyenim-Boateng – all deputy ministers - who move from one radio stations to the other “lambasting the former president and ridiculing him. They are destroying the very foundation of the party. The man will lose respect.”
Meanwhile Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC, Joseph Yamin, said the region is liaising with the government to resolve the matter.
The said the absence of Mr Agyemang and his group is affecting the party’s communication drive.
