Mr. Kofi Adams Aide to former President Jerry Rawlings says the national executives of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) did not inform their party founder about the ruling party’s merger with the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP). Kofi Adams claimed his boss was deliberately sidelined from the Council of Elders meeting which agreed on the merger because of his [Rawlings] recent criticisms of the ruling party and government. The NDC at a colourful ceremony at the party headquarters Tuesday, welcomed the ex-breakaway Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) into its fold ahead of the December general elections. Former Chairman of the NDC, Dr. Obed Asamoah who led the breakaway faction and then Deputy General Secretary of the NDC Bede Ziedeng who were at the ceremony, pledged their commitment to work to ensure the ruling party retains power. The DFP which broke away from the NDC in 2006 after some disagreements at the party's delegates Congress in Koforidua is now a defunct political party after merging with the NDC. But Kofi Adams on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday said the NDC/DFP merger is news to him. According to Adams, the former President’s Office did not receive an invitation from the party about the programme. He wondered why the leadership of the NDC failed to invite the Chairman of the Council of Elders who is also the founder of the party before taking such a crucial decision. “People in government don’t form the party, neither people holding positions form the party. The party is bigger than any individual; it belongs to all of us,” he said. The suspended Deputy General Secretary of the NDC indicated that Mr. Rawlings will not stop his criticism of government and the party until the values and principles on which the NDC was formed are restored. Kofi Adams said he is yet to brief the former President who is out of the country on the recent development in the NDC for an appropriate response. In a quick rebuttal however, the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia said Kofi Adams has misconstrued the issue. He explained that the Council of Elders of the party of which Mr. Rawlings is the Chairman had concluded their work on the merger hence their presence was not required. The NDC scribe added that the press conference was to announce to Ghanaians the merger and the way forward for the two parties in the December general elections. General Mosquito as he is popularly called, was optimistic that the NDC with a united front would retain power in December.
