Editor of the Gye Nyame Concord newspaper Alfred Ogbamey has warned of trouble should Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings lose in the flagbearership contest of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) come July 8. This, he said, would be the case because Mrs Rawlings and her husband ex-President Jerry John Rawlings would not give up their quest for power to control the party and by extension Ghana as a whole. Many analysts have argued that the ongoing power struggle for the soul of the NDC would leave the party disunited. On Thursday, Ogbamey, who was commenting on the situation on Peace FM’s current affairs programme Kokrokoo, was emphatic in claiming Mrs Rawlings would be defeated at the congress but insisted her husband was urging her on because of his ‘never say die spirit’ and a belief that he can take back the NDC. He added that there was nobody in Ghana - like the ex-president - who can manipulate a minority of Ghanaians perpetually to his advantage. “…When he [Rawlings] believes in something, he fights till perpetuity and unless you also have that fighting spirit…you will give up,” the editor stated. Mr Ogbamey said the problem was more worrisome because on the one hand - it would be difficult for the Rawlingses to accept the impending defeat - and on the other President Mills would be seen as a weak leader if he does not win with a wider margin. As the situation holds now, Ogbame believes the NDC cannot unite after the congress. “But it’s too late, it will be difficult. I cannot see how the Rawlingses will reconcile with the Mills administration. "They have gone beyond the bridge [for] reconciliation to happen," he maintained.
