We wish to express our concern over the Finder Newspaper publication of Wednesday June 6, 2012 captioned above that disclosed among others that, “drivers at the 37 Station have taken to excessive drinking with the excuse of mourning their fellow driver, 33-year-old George Osei” who was crushed to death with some other passengers on board his 207 Benz bus by an Allied Air cargo plane on Saturday June 2, 2012. The Commission commiserates with the families of the crash victims yet caution that, alcohol intake impairs concentration and judgment required to drive safely. It is therefore worrying that drivers at the 37 terminal as reported will take to drinking while working under the guise of mourning their colleague. Our preliminary investigation corroborates the report of the Finder newspaper that some drivers operating from the 37 terminal have taken to drinking alcohol to mourn their departed colleague even as they keep to driving at the risk of public safety. Though we are unable to propose suitable modes of mourning the death of their departed colleague, drink driving is certainly not an option that we can endorse ahead of and during the one week customary rites of their departed colleague. Drivers, especially those at the 37 Terminal are reminded that drink driving is a major offence under the Road traffic Act 683, 2004 and attracts a punishment of up to a fine of.GHc1200 or term of imprisonment of 40 months or both We call on the MTTU to increase their presence at the 37 Terminal to check such high risk practices and also encourage passengers to assume frontline responsibility by denouncing drivers who demonstrate symptoms of drink driving It is our expectation that Managers of the 37 Terminal will also enforce their internal control systems as provided by the Commercial Road Transport Passenger Service Operators Standards recently issued by the Commission. Road traffic deaths are preventable and the process must start with you Signed. Kwame Koduah Atuahene Head, Communications National Road Safety Commission
