At the 3rd annual transformative dialogue on small-scale mining in Sunyani on Wednesday, May 15, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, unveiled the #Atree4Life project aimed at reforestation efforts in regions ravaged by illegal mining activities.
Mr Mahama's announcement emphasized the project's dual purpose of not only rehabilitating forest areas impacted by illegal mining but also generating employment opportunities, particularly for the youth.
By engaging in reforestation efforts, the project seeks to address environmental degradation while simultaneously tackling unemployment.
The #Atree4Life initiative is envisioned to transform reforestation into a financially viable endeavor, offering a promising pathway for economic advancement.
Mr Mahama highlighted the potential for economic growth through the cultivation of economically valuable tree crops, a venture that aligns with both environmental conservation goals and the nation's economic development agenda.
Under Mr Mahama's plan, the youth will play a pivotal role in overseeing the cultivation and growth of economically viable tree crops.
According to him, by actively participating in environmental conservation efforts, the youth will not only contribute to the restoration of forest ecosystems but also gain valuable skills and experience in sustainable land management practices.
“I announced plans to launch a #Atree4Life project at the 3rd annual transformative dialogue on small-scale mining in Sunyani,” he posted.
“With the active involvement of young people, this project aims to re-afforest mining areas while creating job opportunities. It will transform re-afforestation into an economically engaging activity, offering a promising avenue for economic development. The youth will oversee the growth of economically viable tree crops, contributing to environmental conservation and economic growth,” he added.
