Member of Parliament for Tema East Constituency, Daniel Titus Glover is prompting Government to re-consider its proposed tax increase on fishermen following the government’s offer to put a one per cent tax levy on fishing implements. The import levy bill which imposes a one percent import duty on Outboard Motors used by Fishermen, was approved by Parliament under a certificate of urgency on WednesdayIn an interview on the AM: Show on Multi TV he said “the minority is not against the attempt of government to raise additional revenue to implement the programmes and projects outlined in the 2013 budget”.He says he believes the levy will increase the cost of fish implements and ultimately an increase in food cost. He says the levy also has the potential to impoverish subsistence fishermen most of whom are below the poverty line.Titus Glover explains that the right people to be tasked are not fishermen.“They are still struggling to establish themselves with little or no support from the government. Fishermen are very vulnerable. They do not always make a catch to attain large profit”, he emphasized. The Tema East MP lamented that although the fishing sector provides sixty per cent of what the country consumes much attention is not paid to it.
He said the government of Ghana over the years has concentrated greatly on the agriculture sector leaving out the fisheries sector. The MP suggested that the government should look at other areas of generating revenue; and rather than taxing fishermen to their detriment, he says, they should be supported.
