General Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has asked supporters of the party to refrain from activities which will divide its rank and file.
According to him, actions that undermine the unity and strength of the party will be a great disservice to the legacy of late former President Rawlings.
He made the remarks, Friday, during the 42nd anniversary of the June 4, uprising.
This is the first commemoration after the demise of the architect of the revolution, former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Mr Rawlings died on November 12, 2020 after he fell ill and was sent to the Korle-Bu Teaching hospital for treatment.
During his speech at the event, Mr Asiedu Nketia indicated that this year's event is special because Mr Rawlings will be remembered among the fallen Heroes who laid down their lives for this country. "We need to remind ourselves about what brought about June 4 and to resolve that we will follow the principles of June 4 that were proclaimed to deal with the ills of society that existed before the revolution, and to promise as a country, to lead a different lifestyle that will not lead us into another June 4," he said.
He further noted that the revolution can be remembered as the "foundation event of the establishment of the NDC party."
He observed how sad it feels to come to the reality that President Rawlings, who in previous years was called upon either to lay a wreath or to light a perpetual flame is absent and now the perpetual flame and the laying of wreath will be done in remembrance of him.
"This now puts the party at a crossroads. If we manage ourselves well, we will continue and reinvigorate this party and allow it to grow from strength to strength as a legacy of the founder of the revolution [but] if we don't manage it well, and the party retrogresses, then we would have done a great disservice to the honour of the founder of the revolution."
"Let's unite in our collective endeavour to make sure that the only lasting legacy we can put in his remembrance is living and strengthening NDC," he said.
