The Kwadaso Cluster of Schools in Kumasi has benefitted from a generous donation of an elevated 1800 litre water reservoir to help ensure the availability of clean water to pupils there.

Hitherto, pupils, particularly of the Ohwimase MA School which is one of the schools in the cluster, were faced with serious water challenges. 

They had to travel to the next community to get potable water, a situation that took a huge toll on academic activities.

The donation was made possible through a collaborative effort of the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Garden City and the University Hall (Katanga) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.

Handing the facility over to the school, JCI Garden City President, Gideon Owusu Yeboah, admonished the school to develop a maintenance culture to enhance the lifespan of the reservoir.

Headmistress of the school, Adwoah Adyei Boahene expressed relief, describing it as a timely solution to their water problems.

On Wednesday, 29th March, 2017, the students and teachers of Kwadaso Cluster of Schools witnessed a quantum leap over their pressing problems when the seemingly far-fetched solutions arrived at no cost of theirs, courtesy the collaborative efforts of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Garden City and The University Hall, popularly known as Katanga, of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.

Junior Chamber International (JCI) comprises of young active citizens who are poised to provide developmental opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. The organisation is noted for undertaking numerous sustainable developmental projects aimed at solving societal challenges in partnership with like-minded identifiable groups and institutions in our communities.

The University Hall, (Katanga) is an all-male hall of residence of KNUST. The hall is known for undertaking or championing the provision of numerous social intervention projects within the Kumasi metropolis.

The project was necessitated after previous needs assessment results suggested that students of the Ohwimase MA Primary and JSS schools at Kwadaso are faced with unparalleled water challenges. In this age of ours, they have to travel to next community for potable water, a situation that exposes them to numerous harm and drudgery. This has taken a wanton toll on their academics and other co-curricular activities.

The hand washing education aligns with good health and well-being, the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of the United Nations. In this aspect, a professional nurse was hired to educate mostly the students and the staff on the best hygiene procedures for maintaining clean hands to improve personal hygiene.

On the other part, an elevated 1800 litre water reservoir was installed in the school premises with a rain harvester fitted in fulfilment of SDG 6, clean water and sanitation. When handing the facility over to the school, the JCI Garden City President, Gideon Owusu Yeboah, admonished the school to develop a maintenance culture to enhance the lifespan of the setup.

In her response, the Headmistress of the school, who was full of praise for the kind gesture, asserted that, it is a timely solution to their water problem and that she will do everything within her authority to maximise its usage and lifespan. To walk the talk, she appointed five students as sanitation prefects, charging them to manage the setup and to regulate patronage.
