Religious leaders in the country have impressed upon the Electoral Commission to defer elections in the newly created constituencies to next year. The request comes as their latest high powered meeting with political parties and the Commission ended inconclusively again. The Ghana Conference on Religion and Peace, which constitutes Christian and Muslim bodies in the country have been seeking middle ground on the controversy over the creation of the 45 new constituencies. At their second meeting in Accra Monday, the religious leaders however agreed that the creation of the new seats was legal, proper and irreversible but argued that the EC must also consider the time factor.According to Most Rev, Joseph Osei Bonsu, a member of the Conference who also chairs the Ghana Council of Religion for Peace, the major stakeholders involved must think through the possibility of holding elections at a later date. The EC's bid to create the 45 constituencies has been met with varying opposition from civil societies and political parties who argue that the creation is too close to the December 7 polls. The Ghana Conference on Religion and Peace would next meet the political parties to dialogue over the way forward over the creation of the 45 constituencies.
