Newly appointed Rennes coach Frédéric Antonetti has set himself the task of improving Asamoah Gyan's fortunes in France.
The Ghanaian international forward was limited to 16 top-flight games and just a solitary league goal last season as he struggled to settle in France after moving to Brittany from Italian side Udinese.
Antonetti, who has taken over from Guy Lacombe at the Stade de la Route de Lorient this summer, will be without star forward Jimmy Briand when the new season starts as the French international works his way back to fitness after rupturing knee ligaments.
However, the ex-Saint Etienne and Nice boss believes Gyan can help fill the void left by Briand's absence if the 23-year-old can rid himself of the injury problems that dogged his first season in France.
"The idea is that I start with the same squad and improve it," said Antonetti. "For me, Gyan has a lot of quality, but there are question marks over his form and his adaptation, because he is often injured.
"With Jimmy Briand injured, we'll have to strengthen up front, but that will depend on who leaves the club. I wish just one thing - that everyone stays here."
