President John Mahama has tasked operators of the Weija treatment plant to do all they can to reduce the rate of losses in the water production and distribution process. About 40 percent of water treated for domestic use is unaccounted for due to illegal connections and wastage resulting from burst pipes. That, the president believes, is unacceptably high and charged managers of the urban water system to reverse the trend. President Mahama made the call during a visit to the Weija Dam site as part of his tour of utility installations in the wake of water and power crises. The president also charged the water company to improve upon revenue collection in order to facilitate continued investment in the sector. Joy News’ Hannah Odame who was travelling with the President also reported officials at the Weija treatment plant as saying that consumers within the Tema and Accra areas will soon enjoy improved water supply. They said work on another filter bed was near completion and will provide an additional 3.5 million gallons of water daily. Repair works on a number of filters at the Weija treatment plant led to water rationing in parts of the capital. It is hoped the rationing will be reduced drastically when the filter bed is fixed.
