The Project Manager of Improving Business Practice, Mr Ben Johnson Oduro, has called on managements of business organisations to adopt the Ghana Business Code, which is based on human and labour rights, the environment and anti-corruption.
He made the call at a one-day seminar on the implementation of the code, organised by the IBP, Sekondi-Takoradi Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry (STRCCI) and the Danish International Development Agency (Danita) for the business community at Takoradi.
Mr Oduro said the code should be integrated into business practices and become part of the strategy, culture and day-to-day operations of companies.
He said companies should also advocate for the code in their annual reports and procurement documents.
Mr Oduro said the code is in line with the 10 principles of the United Nations Global Compact and are compatible with the country's legal and regulatory framework relating to the business sector.
He said: “The code is based on a long-term perspective for improving business practice in Ghana.”
Mr Oduro said the code requires companies to identify specific human rights challenges in their areas of operation or location and to use collective bargaining as a forum to address working conditions and terms of employment.
Mr James Kainyah, Chairman of STRCCI, said compliance with codes of business conduct is becoming a requirement in especially the supply chain management of large corporations, matchmaking and financing.
He urged companies to commit themselves to the principles of continuous change and improvement.
