The National Propaganda Secretary of the ruling NDC, Richard Quashigah has accused the opposition New Patriotic Party of making illogical, ugly noises by accusing the ruling government of contributing to the chaos that has attended the local level elections. According to him, he finds it very childish, absurd and unthinkable for the NPP to link the government to the many failures that have bedevilled the elections. The NPP has expressed worry about the haphazard postponements and the generally poor organization of the exercise. A statement issued by the party Wednesday in Accra warned that "...if it is the intention of the NDC government to frustrate the EC so that they (the NDC) could reap diabolical electoral advantage from the resulting lapses, then they should abandon that idea. Ghana’s democracy has come a long way, and Ghanaians are determined to defend it fearlessly”. It continued that “There is little assurance that the 2012 elections will be freely, fairly and properly conducted. And the dangers thereof are obvious”. But speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, Mr. Quashiga noted that it is not the first time the Electoral Commission has complained of not receiving funds early enough from the government. “They are talking about the EC not receiving funds early enough... Even the 2008 general elections were there not complaints about government not releasing funds on time?” He added that the NDC has no intention of rigging the 2012 elections or favour its party members in the ongoing district assembly elections. “If the NPP is saying the NDC is manipulating the elections to give advantage to their people then they are violating the law because the constitution clearly says that it is not supposed to be partisan”. He said the Electoral Commission should rather be blamed for the flaws and not the government and explained that the NDC is equally concerned about the way the EC is conducting the district assembly elections by postponing the election without giving prior notice. “We recognize that there are some challenges with the EC but the manner in which this one has been postponed is what we have an issue with”. Meanwhile, Perry Okudzeto, Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, has challenged the government to come clean and tell Ghanaians that it does not have a hand in what is happening. “There have been flaws with the electoral process. We have asked questions that are these supposed to favour the NDC? If it is something that they do not have a hand in it, the NDC should just tell us they do not have a hand in it”, he added. The Electoral Commission (EC) has pointed to inadequate time to organise the elections as a major reason for the hold-ups of elections in several regions and localities but discounts claims that a late release of funds by the government is a contributing factor.
